Take a few moments to reflect on your journey. What does it all mean? How has your thinking changed between Thing 1 and Thing 23?
What a journey this has been. There have been moments of complete frustration where I have felt very irritated that things seemed so difficult. There have been other moments where I have felt very accomplished and proud of something I created or something new that I had learned. My thinking has definitely changed about Web 2.0. I had no idea the wealth of tools and information available. It has opened my mind and made me realize that as teachers we are going to have to change our ways of teaching because the students are learning in different and more advanced ways.
Has this program changed how you view of the internet or how you view education in the digital world?
Yes, there is so much still left to be explored the possibilities are endless. It is important for educators to keep up with the changing technology. I hope that RESA will continue to offer classes like this one to help educators change with the times.
What plans have you made for using these tools in and out of the classroom?
Out the classroom I will continue to use librarything.com which I learned about in Thing 17. I think this is a great online productivity tool for people who love to read. I am now also regularly using Delicious to keep track of websites.
In the classroom, I will probably use podcasting, wikkis and maybe even blog on a class website. We will see!
How will continue to learn about Web 2.0 tools?
In the process of this class, I came across several places that address Web 2.0 and that will help to keep me up to date. One of those is in wikkispaces: Web 2.0 Cool Tools for Schools
What are your big "take aways" from this experience?
I think the most important thing that I have learned is that there is so much on the web to be discovered and explored. Even though I have had some very frustrating moments I have learned so much and had fun. There are so many useful tools that I can use at home and in the classroom. Thanks for the great journey!

Thing 22 - Create a Wikki
http://graysvolunteers.wikispaces.com
After creating the wikki, I found even more benefits in wikkis than just looking at them in Thing 21. I will also add that I was very frustrated while creating the wikki. The wikki I created is a volunteer schedule for my class. I tried to create a calendar using the google calendar widget, but gave up after an hour. I then created a calendar in Pulbisher and created a link to the calendar for my parents.
I feel a wikki is different than a blog because a wikki can be changed to update information. It is a work of collaboration. Where a blog is used for sharing and responding information, but not changing things as you work on the project.
I think both a wikki and a blog are great ways to communicate with each other, but a wikki allows more team work and would serve projects that require updating and changes.

Thing 21 - Learn About Wikis
Describe a wiki you found that inspires you to create one of your own.
I definitely see the benefit of a wiki when working together on something collaboratively. Since I am not collaborating with anyone right now I am not inspired at the moment to create a wiki. I could see me using this in the future on a project. This could be used for school improvement projects.
However, I really liked a wiki I found that was called Web 2.0 cool tools for schools. I bookmarked it in my delicious account.
http://cooltoolsforschools.wikispaces.com
What hurdles might stand in the way of your using a wiki?
I noticed many people that started a wiki did it independently and did not come back and update their web page. I guess my understanding of making it a wiki is so that you could collaborate. I would want to work together to keep the web page updated.
Is it worth the fight?
If the information you are trying to share is valuable and would be used, I think it would be worth the fight.

Thing 20 - Finding and Subscribing to Podcasts
The podcast that I decided to subscribe to is called Meet the Author - Reading Rockets
This podcast had various top authors and illustrators of children's books. The purpose of the podcast was to interview the authors and illustrators to introduce them to children. One particular author I viewed was Marc Brown. Marc Brown writes the books about Arthur and D.W. and he talked about how various people he knew in his childhood became the people in his stories.
I think the interviews with the authors would be a great experience to share with my students and help get them excited about reading and writing.
Out of the three different ways in Thing 20 about finding and subscribing to Podcasts, I liked the itunes. I liked how you could store all of the podcasts in the same area. It also got me thinking about finally learning how to use my ipod.

Thing 19 - Learn About Podcasting
Which Podcasts did you find interesting?
The one that I spent the most time on was a health podcast. It was a monthly podcast that addressed different health issues.
The second one that I spent some time with has the web address listed below. I tried to put a link, but I could not get it to work.
At epnweb.org I watched several podcasts on the Smart Board. Our school got a Smart Board a year and a half ago. There is only one for the whole school to share so I have not used it this year. I would like to use it more, but I have already forgotten many of the things I originally learned so I think the multiple podcasts on Smart Boards will help me.

Thing 18 - Slideshare
Check out this SlideShare Presentation:
What did you like about the presentation you embedded?
I thought this slideshow was a good presentation to share since it is relevant to what we are learning about. The 23 things we have learned in this class are all at the top of the list of the 100 most important things for learning 2009. I thought it may be of interest to the other participants in the class.
How might Slideshare be useful in the classroom?
I think this would be helpful because there are already so many well put together slideshows that we could share with our students. Why re-create if it is already available?

Thing 16 - Google Docs
How might you use this tool in your personal and professional life?
I think professionally that Google Docs is a great resource for colleagues to collaborate on a document. Just last week another grade level teacher and I were working on making a math assessment. She made the assessment at home and then e-mailed it to me at home. I caught a few errors in the wording. I had to e-mail her back and have her make the changes. In Google Docs we would have been able to work on it together.
What issues come to mind about using this tool with students?
The biggest issue that I see is that not all students have internet access at home. With an e-mail address being required for log-in this may pose a problem.

Thing 17 - Online Productivity
After viewing the first couple of online productivity tools, I wasn't sure if I would find one that I would use often. After using LibraryThing, I found a tool that I will use all the time. I spent hours on LibraryThing. LibraryThing allows you to put in all the books you have read. I put in forty of the books that I have read most recently. After you add each book, you rate the book and can write a review if you want. Based on the books you have read and the rating you give it, the site comes up with a recommended reading list. I noticed that several books that I have been considering buying came up on my recommended list. Now I have less reservations about spending money on them or maybe I will even go to the library to check them out.
The site also finds other users who have similar lists as yours and shows you other books they have read.
The users of this site in general give pretty good reviews of the books. I was excited to find this tool. With summer coming up, I will be reading a lot and now know where I can find some good book recommendations.

Thing 15 - RSS Revisited
Is RSS becoming easier to understand?
Yes, RSS is becoming easier to understand. The more I use it the more comfortable I am becoming.
Do you recognize new benefits of this tool?
I do see more benefits of RSS. Initially, I did not put any news feeds in my subscriptions. My first subscriptions were mostly for my classroom. I liked the news feeds in Reuters. I also liked that I could bring in blogs from Delicious. I like how you can find the most popular blogs and have those directly sent to you in your RSS feed.
Do you remember to check your feeds regularly?
No, I have not been checking them on a regular basis. I have been doing it on the weekends only. I guess that is as regular as it can be for me right now with my crazy daily schedule. I can see how the news feeds might be something I would want to check more frequently.

Thing 14 - Bookmarking with Delicious
Wow! I definitely spent a lot of time with Thing 14. Delicious.com was new to me and I spent a lot of time looking at the tagged websites.
My delicious user name is:dawngray99
I think this social bookmarking will be very helpful to me. I often find a site and use it once and then forget about it, even though I could have bookmarked it. Now that I am more aware of the capabilities of tagging I think I will keep better track of sites I am interested in. I really liked how Delicious showed how many other people have added sites to their bookmarks. This helped me filter through the sites and pick the best ones.
I think Delicious will be a tool that will enhance my productivity. I can quickly look to see what sites I have on a given topic and then choose which one will best meet the needs of my students at the time. I also think it would be helpful if my colleagues and I shared their bookmarked sites with each other.
I am glad to put all of the information I need in one location and that I can access it anywhere I have an internet connection.

Thing 13 - Social Bookmarking and Tagging
Is tagging a useful way to organize your digital resources and why?
I think tagging will be useful. I like the idea that you can keep track of sites you use on one computer. Often I will tag something on my home computer and then will have a hard time finding the same site when I am school. I like how through Delicious you can access your tagged sites from any computer.
What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?
As a community of learners and advantage would be to share sites with colleagues. A second advantage is that you could access the information from anywhere. A disadvantage could be trying to remember what tag you put on the site.
What is important to think about before assigning tags to bookmarks or other Internet content?
I think it is important for you to remember that this information can be shared with others, so you need to be careful what sites you tag. It is also important that you give it a tag that relates well to the bookmarked site so that you and others are able to find it in your tags.

Thing 12
The widget I embedded is a count down clock. I am sure all of us are looking forward to Easter Break so I put a count down clock for me and the readers of this blog to keep track of the number of days until break.
Widgets were new to me. I was surprised by how much is out there and actually want to go back to the sites and spend more time exploring.
Questions from assignment:
Are you getting comfortable with embedding codes?
Yes, I am getting more comfortable with the codes. I did not need to look back at my notes until the last step. Now hopefully, it works correctly.
Do you belong to other online communities?
The only other online community I belong to is Facebook.
Are relationships formed online as meaningful as face-to-face relationships?
For me my face-to-face relationships are definitely stronger. However, online communities such as Facebook help me keep up relationships with family and friends that I do not see on a regular basis.
Why do you think MySpace and other social networking sites are so popular with kids today?
I think they are popular with kids and adults because it helps you make connections with people that you do not talk to on a regular basis. You can let people know what is going on with your life and can keep updated with family and friends. It also can provide conversation when you do see your family and friends face-to-face. You can talk about things you have read on their social networking site.

Thing 11
Thing 11 showed me I still have a lot to learn about blogging and computers in general.
As I read Sue Caudell's posts I noticed how she copied the questions from the assignment and then stated her response below. For the type of blog we are working on, I think this is a great way to make sure you are covering all of the questions. I think it is also helpful to the readers because then they know what you are responding to.
As I read the WB4All's blog, I noticed how she linked resources to her posts. I think this is very helpful and is a great way to provide additional information to those that are interested. In her blog she had words in a different color that you could click on and it would take you to additional information. I asked my husband how she did this and he told me they were hyperlinks. I guess I have something else I need to learn now too. I just learned how to do a link during this class. Wow! I am feeling computer illiterate.
Now on to the questions!
What do you like/dislike about leaving comments?
I like that you can add your thoughts and can ask questions. I feel it is a great way to connect with people who are experiencing the same things as you. I did not have anything I disliked about it.
How did you feel when you received your first comment?
My first comment was from Resa. I just watched Julie and Julia last night. If you have seen the movie, Julie is ecstatic when she receives her first response to her blog. I think receiving a response lets you know that someone is reading and it validates what you are working on.
Why do you think commenting is so important in online communities?
Commenting encourages the person who is writing the blog. It lets them know someone is reading and gives them a sense of purpose. Commenting also facilitates discussion and helps people learn from each other.
What might this mean for students who share their writing on line?
My first thought is that they need to be tough because not everyone is nice and they may need to learn how to handle criticism. However, I also think it could be a good tool in the classroom for encouraging discussion. Blogging anonymously may help the students who are more apt to not share in class to share and bring new insight to discussions.

Thing 10
I put my embedded video and comments as a separate post. I found it is easy to embed a video from You Tube. I picked this particular video because I had recently received the video in an e-mail and I liked it. It was the first time I had seen the pink gloves and I think this is another great reminder to help support the cause of breast cancer.
I got a little frustrated when I was trying to download a video from You Tube. My computer at home did not follow the same steps as the video presentation so it took me awhile to figure out where the video was going after I selected download. I did not have a choice as to where I wanted to save the video. It automatically went in a file of downloads in my documents. After I found it, I was able to send it to the desktop. I am glad I was able to figure this out in case I wanted to put a video on the desk top for school.

YouTube - Embed Video
I saw this video on You Tube and thought I would share it.
Here's the story behind the video.
"Their daughter-in-law, Emily (MacInnes) Somers, created, directed and choreographed this in Portland last week for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves.
I don't know how she got so many employees, doctors and patients to participate, but it started to really catch on and they all had a lot of fun doing it.
When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community.

Thing 9
While I was looking up some topics on You Tube my young daughter came in to watch. We watched a song called Big Pig that was by Hooked on Phonics. I liked the song. There were a lot of songs by Hooked on Phonics that I thought could be useful when teaching different phonics skills. However, I was very uncomfortable with my daughter looking at the phonics video because of all the advertisements that were around the video. I felt the content of the ads was inappropriate for my daughter and would be inappropriate for my students. However, we also watched the Water Cycle Song and we enjoyed looking at this together and there were not inappropriate ads. I am wondering if there is a way for you to show just the videos without the advertisements being shown.
The Water Cycle Song would be a great video for me to use in my classroom right now. We are learning about weather.
I am not positive, but I believe You Tube is not allowed in my district. I know that we can not access Facebook accounts at school. We also have Deep Freeze on our computers so it erases anything we download every night.

Thing 8 - The Next Day
I just opened up 23 Things to start the next assignment. I am frustrated because the pocket album that I made yesterday was pictured on my blog for Thing 8. Now today it is no longer pictured. I felt quite accomplished yesterday when I figured out how to put it in my post and it was there when I looked at my blog later in the day. Now there is just a box and when I click on it, nothing happens. What did I do wrong?

Thing 8
I found Thing 8 to be time consuming, but at the same time fun. I got frustrated with the Spell with Flickr. I played around with it because I liked the different letters. However, other than copying and pasting one letter at a time, I could not figure out how to take the whole title I made into a new document. I think the Flickr Memry would be very fun for my kids. They love being on the computer and they would enjoy playing Memory Games this way.
At Big Huge Labs, I checked out a lot of the image generators. The one that I played around with the most was the pocket album. You can see the album I created at the top. After cutting the paper in the middle you can fold your pictures into a little album. I made an album of some pictures of my family. In regards to sharing pictures with your student's families, I have liked Flickr the best. However, I think the pocket album would be a nice product to actually give your students. The cutting and folding would be time consuming so you would need to get a parent volunteer to help with this.

Thing 7
My first thought as I started this assignment was I need something to keep track of all my different account login names and passwords. I did not have a Yahoo account so now I have another account, plus a new blogger account, bloglines account and Google account. I think all of the information I have learned so far has been great, but I have account names and passwords written all over the place. I will eventually save these in my computer, but it's a lot to remember.
In regards to the Flickr account, I like the idea of being able to store my pictures in a safe place in case my computer crashes or something else happens. I also like that you can title and tag the picture and write descriptions. What a great way to share pictures with others! I am wondering if you can add pictures in a faster way. Adding one picture at a time for the thousands of photos that we already have would be very time consuming.

Thing 6
The picture that I posted is from Flickr.com. I typed Hawaii into the search box. I chose this particular photo because I have been thinking about Hawaii. I have never been, but my husband and I have our 10th anniversary coming up. I have been searching to plan a trip, but Hawaii is just a dream. I love the colors in the sky in this picture. I also love the palm trees and how you can see their reflection in the water. Just the sight of palm trees is relaxing to me. Maybe we can go for our 20th anniversary.
I was unfamiliar with Flickr before watching the video and exploring on the site today. I like the idea of being able to put your photos on the internet for safe keeping. I guess I am a private person because I would not share my photos with everyone. However, I see this as a great way to share photos with family and close friends. This is also a fantastic way to share photos of field trips and events in your classroom as long as you okay pictures on the internet with your student's parents.

Thing 5
I found RSS easy to use in Bloglines. I really liked how in Firefox you could add Bloglines right to your favorites and then can very easily add any Blogline that participates in RSS to your Blogline account. I really liked some of the classroom blogs in Thing 3. I was happy that I could go back and add some of those blogs to my favorites in my RSS Blogline account. I do find that I am writing myself a lot of notes to remember how to get back to things, but I'm sure the more I use it I will be able to do it without all the notes. Now I am excited to go back and click on some more of the links in the classroom blogs and see what I can discover. I like how I will be notified when the blogs are updated - no more searching for the news. It can come to me now!
Thing 4
After Thing 3 I was excited to find some blogs that were specifically created for my grade level. One of my concerns was that if you don't constantly use something you tend to forget about it. I like that through the use of RSS I will be able to add these blogs into folders and I will be notified when there is new information. I think using other teachers of the same grade level as a resource is a great way to bring new and exciting things to my classroom. After starting a blog of my own and learning about how to do the other things in 23 Things I will be able to share with other teachers too. Not only will RSS help me with my job, I have already added a couple of blogs about books from Bloglines. I love to read and now I can use the information from book blogs to help me make book selections. I think my husband new all this information already. Maybe he didn't share it with me so we wouldn't both want our home computer at the same time. I can see how easily you could spend a lot of time on the computer with the wealth of information available on the net. I had know idea the extent of it.
Thing 3
I really liked learning about blogging in the classroom. I am contemplating if I should start a blog for the remainder of the year for my classroom to get good at it for next year or if I should start fresh in the fall. I liked the link to other classroom blogs. I found the blogs at my same grade level the most interesting. I was surprised to see what kids at a similar age were doing. I thought the class blogging pages were great. I liked how many of the teachers linked different websites for students to access at home for additional practice of what was being covered in class. I also like how some of the teachers had videos and pictures of what was happening in class. One teacher also had videos of educational songs that they had learned in class. What a great way for the parents to learn the songs and encourage the kids to sing at home too. The possibilities are endless for how you could use this at any grade level.
Thing 1 and Thing 2
I am participating in 23 Things for two reasons. The first is to earn CEU's even though I have a long time before my certificate expires. The second reason and most important reason is I see technology advancing and I want to be sure that I am keeping up with it for my personal life and for my life as an educator. I was actually quite surprised to see how far I am falling behind after watching the video in Thing 1. I feel that there are a lot of ways I have been keeping up, but I see I have a lot more to learn. I am glad to see this course being provided by RESA. I am also happy to see that an upcoming inservice in my district will be geared towards different computer programs. It is important for educators to keep up to date so they can be on the same level as their students and prepare them for our changing world.

I just watched the video about blogger.com for the 23 Things Class and I am trying out my first blog post. Let's see how it goes!
